Tallinn 2011 Brings Composer Mirjam Tally to Pirita

In January, the all-year-long event series A Composer in Residence for Every District in Tallinn takes off from Pirita district with music by Mirjam Tally. This series is part of Estonian Composers’ Union‘s contribution to European Capital of Culture Tallinn 2011.

In January, Mirjam Tally is the composer in residence of Pirita. On Wednesday, 12 January at 7 pm Pirita Monastery opens its doors for Mirjam Tally’s Composers’ Recital. Her music will be performed by ensemble Resonabilis and accordionist Sirje Mõttus, accompanied by Indrek Hirv‘s poems. On 14 January, Mirjam Tally also meets the students at the Pirita Gymnasium of Economics. In the photo series by artist Jaanus Samma, Pirita will be seen from quite unfamiliar angle.

Mirjam Tally has created a lot of chamber works and electronic music, recently her orchestral works have gained special attention. Today Mirjam, who once walked home through Pirita streets, lives in Gotland and is acknowledged both in Swedish and Estonian musical life.

Estonia is home for a number of wonderful composers who have still remained Mirjam, Tanja, Märt-Matis, Piret, Tauno, Erkki-Sven, Urmas and Tõnu – even when being busy on world stages. They often derive inspiration for their works from home ground – why not from the districts of Tallinn. During the year of European Capital of Culture, the composers share a bit of their inspiration with townspeople.
