On November 5th, Marianna Liik’s new composition “Stín” for piano and electronics will have its world premiere in Olomouc, Czech Republic, as part of the international contemporary music festival MUSICOLOMOUC. The piece will be performed by Estonian pianist Talvi Hunt. The festival, known for its innovative and boundary-crossing contemporary music programming, brings together composers and performers from various countries, offering a diverse and experimental lineup.
Marianna Liik is one of the most prominent young composers in Estonia, known for her sensitive and detailed musical language. She studied at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and has received recognition in several international composition competitions. “Stín,” which means “shadow” in Czech, can carry multiple meanings. A shadow may refer to darkness, mystery, negative experiences, and memories. In Estonian, the word “vari” also has the meaning of protection—offering shelter from wind, rain, and danger.
